Eyelid inversion ("Entropion") – pathology, in which the edge of the eyelid all over or in a particular area is rotated to the eyeball. In this situation the lashes mechanically irritate the mucous membrane of the eye (cornea and conjunctiva), which causes irritation and can later cause the development of inflammatory and dystrophic changes of the cornea.
Causes of eyelid inversion
Depending on the causes of eyelid inversion, are distinguished:
Involutional (senile) entropion - occurs on the background of age-related weakening of the circular muscle of the eye in older patients
- Cicatricial (post-traumatic) eyelid inversion – develops due eyelid cartilage deformation after injuries or burns of eyelid or eye
- Congenital eyelid inversion – diagnosed in children with congenital abnormalities of the eye orbicular muscle or eyelid cartilage, including malformations (Larsen syndrome)
- Spastic eyelid inversion is the result of spasm of the circular muscle fibers of the eye
- Atonic or paralytic eyelid inversion develops while having paresis or paralysis of the eye circular muscle
Symptoms of entropion
Most often, patients with eyelid inversion complain of eye discomfort, which is caused by irritation of the mucous membrane by eyelid edge turned towards it and by eyelashes on it (pseudo trichiasis). The irritation is accompanied by a feeling of a foreign body in the eye, pain when blinking, swelling and redness of the conjunctiva, may cause tearing, burning, itching.
If entropion was formed long ago, the pathological process may affect the cornea (cornea erosion or degeneration, ulcerative keratitis). Such complications may cause loss of vision.
Diagnostics
The initial symptoms of eyelid inversion may be unnoticed by the patient and identified only during the examination of a specialist. Treatment of entropion

Medical therapy of entropion is directed at symptomatic relief of eye irritation and prevention of lesions of the cornea. Due to this, continuous application of moisturizing preparations (artificial tears), keratoprotector (dexpanthenol) is recommended. Also, the appointment of antibacterial ophthalmic ointment (erythromycin, tetracycline) may be prescribed. In spastic entropion are used injections for temporary akinesia of the eyelid.
Surgical treatment of eyelid inversion may include various techniques depending on the cause of inversion: imposition of wrenched stitches, excision and plastic of spasmed muscle fibers in spastic entropion, strengthening the eyelid in the atonic senile ectropion, skin graft transplantation in cicatricial entropion.
