Symptoms of Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis is a disease, the main manifestation of which is inflammation of the mucous membranes of the eyes. Various factors can cause the inflammation: pathogenic microorganisms, allergens, caustic chemicals, etc.

Infectious conjunctivitis is caused by viruses (most often adenoviruses, herpesviruses, enteroviruses) or bacteria (staphylococcus, gonococcus, streptococcus, etc.). Infectious conjunctivitis often develops as a complication of SARS in epidemically unfavorable period, on the background of reduced immunity. A distinctive feature of infectious conjunctivitis is unilateral eye lesion (over time, the infection extends to the other eye). Acute onset and presence of excretion (often purulent).

Allergic conjunctivitis develops as a manifestation of delayed-type hypersensitivity reactions when exposed by different allergens (animal fur, dust, pollen, etc.). Can be combined with other manifestations such as allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma, allergic dermatitis etc. the Lesions are usually bilateral, accompanied by itching and severe hyperemia of the mucous membranes of the eyes, feeling of a foreign body, dryness or tearing.

Conjunctivitis may develop after contact with certain chemicals (chlorinated water, evaporation of paints or varnishes, household chemicals), when hit in the eye by cosmetics, shampoo, cigarette smoke.

Symptoms of conjunctivitis

General symptoms of conjunctivitis are: foreign body sensation, discomfort, excessive dryness of the eyes, swelling and redness of the eyes.
Bacterial conjunctivitis is usually accompanied by purulent excretion from the eye. In case of viral conjunctivitis there might not be any excretion from the eyes, though there is tearing and redness of the mucous membranes.

Patients with allergic conjunctivitis often complain of severe itching of eyes, excessive tearing, swelling of the mucous membranes of the eyes and eyelids. The lesion is bilateral, and at chronic allergic conjunctivitis, the symptoms are mild (mostly itching, discomfort and redness of the mucosa).

Complications

If conjunctivitis is not treated, it may acquire a chronic course, and in case of inflammation spreading to other structures of the eye – can lead to tragic consequences, for example, irreversible loss of vision. That is why if there are any suspicious symptoms, one should immediately see a doctor, who will prescribe appropriate treatment. The earlier you begin the treatment – the faster (and cheaper) it is possible to cure conjunctivitis.

Diagnostics

Conjunctivitis can be detected by the ophthalmologist on a general examination. In infectious conjunctivitis in order to identify the pathogen and determine its sensitivity to antibiotics it may require a swab from the mucous membrane of the affected eye followed by sowing on a nutrient medium.

Treatment and prophylaxy of conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis treatment

For treatment of infectious conjunctivitis are applied antiseptics, antivirals or broad-spectrum antibiotics in the form of eye drops or ointments. Allergic conjunctivitis possibly requires detection and exception of contact with the allergen, provoking the inflammation of eye mucous membranes. If the allergen cannot be established, antihistamines are recommended (systemically and locally), hormones, drugs, artificial tears.

To prevent conjunctivitis, rules of personal hygiene should be obeyed, adhere strictly to guidelines when wearing contact lenses, avoid contact with common allergens.
