Corneal dystrophyCorneal dystrophy is a group of pathologies that come out as trophic lesion and the change in the structure of the cornea. The outcome of corneal dystrophy is usually irreversible, often progressive decrease of visual acuity.

Reasons that can cause the appearance of corneal dystrophy, multiple: burdened heredity, autoimmune diseases, neurotrophic changes, traumas, inflammatory processes in the cornea, installation of intraocular lenses, etc. In some cases determination of the initial stage of the pathological process fails.

Classification

Corneal dystrophy can be divided into primary and secondary. Primary dystrophies usually are hereditary diseases, secondary – arise due to various pathological processes in the cornea of the eye. Depending on the predominant lesion of certain structures of the cornea, there are different types of corneal dystrophies. Identification of the dystrophy type is only possible according to the results of special studies (pathomorphological examination, genetic analysis).

Symptoms

Despite the variety of corneal dystrophies, their manifestations are similar. Most often corneal syndrome occurs including foreign body sensation in the eye, soreness, redness of the mucous membranes of the eyes, lacrimation, photophobia. Eye lesion in most cases is bilateral. The symptoms of inflammation in the cornea are usually absent, but may occur in case of affiliation of a secondary infection. Corneal edema is common, a violation of its transparency, the deterioration of visual acuity. Patients may complain about the appearance of glares when looking at the light source, intolerance to bright light.

Another symptom of corneal dystrophy is blurred vision in the morning immediately after waking up, with the gradual improvement of vision in the evening. This happens because during sleep the tissues of the cornea accumulate moisture, which after waking up partially evaporates from the surface of the cornea, in consequence of which eye vision is partially restored during the day.

Diagnostics of the disease

For diagnosing corneal dystrophy, a thorough examination of the vision organ must be performed. During examination swelling and thickening of the cornea is revealed, as well as the violation of its transparency. Microscopic examination allows to confirm the diagnosis and determine the type of dystrophy.

Corneal dystrophy treatment

Conservative treatment methods are only effective at the initial stage of the disease and give a temporary effect, therefore, require periodic repeat. They include the use of various tools, which help to restore the integrity of tissues of the cornea and protect it from exposure of provoking factors (keratoprotectors), drops and ointments moisturizing the corneal surface, decongestants means. To accelerate the recovery of the cornea and reduce the pain may be recommended wearing special therapeutic soft contact lenses. In some cases, good effect is reached by laser treatment (e.g., laser stimulation of the cornea).

The only radical method of corneal dystrophy treatment is penetrating keratoplasty (corneal transplantation), during which the affected tissues of the cornea are removed and donor tissue (the graft) is transplanted in their place. Unfortunately, surgery does not guarantee that the corneal dystrophy is not to appear again after a certain period of time, as pathological factors are not eliminated and continue to affect the tissues of the eyes. In this case, you might need another corneal transplantation. Read more about corneal transplantation in our clinic>>>
