Intravitreal injectionIntravitreal injection is a method of introducing medicinal substances directly into the vitreous body. This type of injection is most effective in the treatment of age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, pathologies of retinal vessels, inflammatory lesions of the inner membranes of the eyeball, bleedings inside the eye.

Technique

Intravitreal injection is performed only in a sterile operating room by an experienced surgeon.

Before intervention, the eyelid is disinfected as well as the surface of the eye and skin around it. After a preliminary local eye-drop anesthesia, sclera and the adjacent flat part of the ciliary body is pierced in 4 mm from the limbus with a syringe, using a thin injection needle.
