Nearsightedness (myopia) – pathology, in which a person can clearly see objects that are close, but can not distinguish the details of faraway subjects. According to statistics, there are more than 1 billion people with myopia, and this number increases year after year.
In myopic people, the eyeball is often enlarged in the anteroposterior area, and due to that the image of objects is focused not strictly on the retina, but in front of it (the so-called axial myopia). That is why a person with myopia sees a fuzzy, blurred image. In some cases, the size of the eye in myopia may remain normal, but the optical power of the refractive areas is increased (so-called refractive myopia).

The increase of the eyeball size in myopia is accompanied by violation of the vascular and retinal membranes trophic, which contributes to the progression of the disease and further reduction of visual acuity.

Myopia (nearsightedness) and its treatment

Classification

In practice are distinguished: mild myopia (3 diopters or less), medium (from 3,25 to 6 diopters) and high (more than 6 diopters). High myopia can reach considerable numbers (more than 20 diopters). Myopia can be acquired or congenital pathology, the degree of deterioration of visual acuity over time may remain constant (stable myopia) or the vision can progressively worsen (progressive myopia).

People with myopia have to wear glasses or contact lenses. Lenses with the scattering effect are used, they "move" the image of the object to the retina. In myopia of high degree, accompanied by the appearance of dystrophic changes in the retina, correction of visual acuity to 1 in some cases is impossible.

Causes of myopia

The direct causes of myopia are:

  • Congenital or acquired change in the shape of the eye, increase of its anteroposterior axis. Developing axial myopia may be accompanied by dystrophic changes of the retina, development of myopic cone, breaks and retinal detachment.
  • Over-refraction of light rays as they pass through the cornea and the crystalline lens.

To date, the factors that contribute to the development of myopia are well studied. The leading factors in the development of myopia are:

  • Family history (especially for those who have both parents suffer from myopia).
  • Imperfect frame of the eyeball in combination with the weakening of tissues of the sclera and increased intraocular pressure.
  • Primary disturbance of accommodation.
  • A combination of several adverse factors that increase the risk of myopia development: skeletal pathology (scoliosis, flat feet, rickets), frequent colds, allergies, birth trauma in anamnesis, weakened immune system.
  • Disregard the rules of hygiene: chronic overstrain of the eye, reading under adverse conditions (bad lighting, transport, supine), incorrect pose while writing or reading.

Treatment of myopia

Short sight - causes

Methods of myopia treatment are selected individually, depending on the degree and type of myopia, the presence of concomitant diseases of the eye, patient's age, working conditions and many other factors.
Timely diagnostics of myopia and prevention of its progression is of great importance.
Correction of myopia can be done in several ways:

  • wearing glasses;
  • wearing contact lenses;
  • laser vision correction.

To stop the progression of myopia is used sclera strengthening surgery (scleroplasty). According to indications of the detection of dystrophic changes in the retina may be assigned Preventive retinal laser photocoagulation.

Glasses and contact lenses can only temporarily improve vision in myopia, the only effective treatment method of myopia today is laser vision correction.

Costs of myoipia treatment

Prices

The cost of myopia treatment consists of diagnostic tests, volume of medical manipulations and procedures (selection of glasses or contact lenses, laser coagulation of the retina, course of drug therapy, scleroplasty, etc.), which is assigned individually for each patient, based on the dynamics of disease, complications, etc. The individual approach allows to achieve maximum therapeutic effect to preserve and improve vision of the patient.
