The retina is a thin layer of nerve tissue that is adjacent all over from the outside to the eye choroid and from the inside to the vitreous body. The retina is responsible for color and light perception of the image which is projected on it by refractive areas of the eye (cornea, crystalline lens, vitreous body, intraocular fluid) and converts this image into nerve impulses, and those, in turn, transmit them to the brain.
Все All diseases of the retina are divided into dystrophic, inflammatory, vascular, neoplasm and malformations. Pathology of the retina is one of the major causes of blindness, low vision and visual disability, however, modern ophthalmology quite effectively copes with many kinds of pathological processes in the retina, and the leading role among treatment methods is given rightfully to laser treatments, including laser coagulation.
Laser coagulation is recommended when central and/or peripheral retinal dystrophy, some types of tumors, vascular and inflammatory diseases. In addition, this method is used to prevent progression of dystrophy, retinal detachment and other fundus pathologies with the aim of strengthening the "weak" thinning areas.
For now, laser coagulation is one of the main methods of struggling with "lattice" dystrophy, dystrophy "snail track" type, diabetic changes in the retina, thrombosis of the retinal veins and the wet form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, using local instillations (drip) anesthesia, which does not lead to strains on the heart, blood vessels and other internal organs. Session of laser coagulation lasts about 15-20 minutes and is well tolerated by most patients of any age and does not impose restrictions on normal life of a person.
During laser exposure, the local temperature rise of the tissue is observed, which leads to clotting (coagulation). The laser allows you to create a tight connection between the choroid and the retina of the eye, which prevents detachment of the latter and prevents further spread of the pathological process. During the surgery a special mirrored lens is installed on the eye, which helps the laser beam to fully penetrate the internal environment of the eye and to precisely localize the area of its impact. The whole procedure is controlled by the surgeon with use of a special microscope.
The advantages of laser coagulation of the retina are:
Marina Matveeva (27 years, insurance specialist)
…for several minutes I only saw bright flashes and that is all. No pain, no cuts and other things associated with the word "operation"…
…after laser coagulation I could give birth by myself, without caesarean section, that was reflected in the conclusion…
The price of the procedure is determined after consultation with laser surgeon: it depends on the diagnosis and extent of intervention required.
