Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is currently the most effective and safe laser treatment of glaucoma. This type of operation allows normalizing the intraocular pressure, including patients for whom drug treatment (anti glaucomatous drops) does not bring the desired effect or is contraindicated.

Indications
SLT is the operation of choice:
- in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, and narrow angle glaucoma after iridotomy (1-2 stage, IOP 30 mm Hg);
- in case of intolerance or ineffectiveness of drug therapy of glaucoma, including patients having difficulties with adherence to the use of hypotensive eye drops;
- in moderate and severe pigmentation of the trabeculae in the anterior chamber angle;
- in patients with postuveal, pseudoexfoliative and aphakic glaucoma;
- in case of unsatisfactory results of surgical treatment of glaucoma.
The point of the operation
In the process of SLT there is a selective laser impact on pigmented cells of the trabecular area of the anterior corner of the eye. The operation is carried out using modern high-precision laser having a wavelength of 532 nm.
The mechanism of SLT action is based on the cell activation of macrophages pigment cells of trabecular zone. During the procedure, due to the short (3 NS) selective impact of laser beams, heat or coagulating effect is not observed.
During the operation on a selected area is applied to 50 point laser applicants. The procedure guarantees to achieve a lowering of IOP to 6 - 8 mm Hg. The effectiveness of surgery is higher in patients with initial and developed stages of glaucoma, in advanced stages of the disease it may have insufficient or short-term effect.

- lack of effectiveness of the procedure (in approximately 12 % of patients), which requires further surgery.
